•A novel 2D layered MOF with outstanding hydrothermal and chemical stability.•The highest Qst value of 28.4 kJ/mol and excellent CH4/N2 selectivity of 7.3 (298 K).•A pillared angular inorganic anion provides strong binding sites in close proximity.
