Vineyard Trial Demonstrates Effectiveness of Roguing and Replanting to Curtail the Spread of Grapevine Leafroll Disease

• Roguing contributed the most benefits relative to insecticides. Grapevine leafroll disease, which reduces yield and delays ripening of grapes, is one of the most important viral grapevine diseases worldwide. In Finger Lakes Cabernet franc vineyards, for example, it was shown to delay accumulation of juice soluble solids by about 3 weeks, and reduce yield by up to 25%. The virus is introduced to vineyards in infected planting stock, but is spread to adjacent vines by insect vectors such as the grape mealybug.
