The current generation of electric vehicles is characterised by increasing market growth. Factors like customer behaviour, infrastructure, new competitors, and technological improvements lead to high demand uncertainties and volatile volume forecasts. In line with the changing market environment, there is a change in the supply chain regarding purchased components, suppliers, and market power. The changed supply chain structure and market uncertainties cause significant challenges for automobile manufacturers in the capacity and flexibility planning of their changeable production systems and supply chains. This paper presents a novel capacity planning process for changeable production systems and supply chains. The capacity planning approach presented in this paper addresses the application of a simulation as the basis of a decision support system to improve capacity planning in an uncertain market environment. The simulation results show that the novel planning approach, in combination with the simulation, leads to an increase in production and supply chain flexibility while reducing operating and flexibility costs.
