Abstract Within Africa, this species has been reported to have spread into Western Cape Province, South Africa, where it feeds on introduced ornamental Phoenix palms. It is also suspected to be alien in Eritrea, where it feeds primarily on ornamental P. canariensis, but also on date palm, P. dactylifera. It has not spread to other parts of the tropics, but if it did, it could be a significant pest of ornamental Phoenix palms, and perhaps also date palms.
