On the encoding of signals in physiological systems

It is known that parathyroid hormone levels can be both anabolic and catabolic to bone mass depending on how its levels vary over time. We argue, using ideas from control theory and dynamical sytems, that this phenomenon arises because of “feedback effects" in the underlying dynamical system and the in-homogeneity in the composition of the tissues.
