and WHY THIS NOTE? Fruits and vegetables are an important source of micronutrients in the diet. Inadequate consumption of these foods contributes to an estimated 2.7 million deaths per year from chronic diseases and is the sixth main risk factor for mortality in the world. Intake of fruits and vegetables in Kenya is below recommended levels. Fruits and vegetables are not only nutritious for humans bacteria and other foodborne pathogens also thrive on these foods, making them important sources of foodborne illness.
