•Motorcycle to car deaths (MDC) ratio followed a reverse U-curve relationship with the logarithm of GDP per capita.•There was a reverse U-curve relationship between the MDC ratio and the motorcycle to car ownership ratio (MPC)•Results evidence a U-curve relationship between the MDC ratio and the MPA.
