Etiological & clinical spectrum of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) related burns: A three-year study from a tertiary care burn centre in New Delhi

•Evolution in LPG burns epidemiology based on its predominant use as cooking fuel.•Increasing proportion of LPG burns from 0.7% (1993–2000) to 10.7% (2001–2007) to 27.4% (2009–2011) as per previous epidemiological studies done (by same author).•Out of total 401 LPG burn cases in 3 years, about 10% accounted for multiple mishaps involving multiple victims.•Aim to evaluate existing knowledge of LPG burn victims regarding safe practices of LPG usage using pre validated questionnaire and study various parameters affecting LPG burn epidemiology.•Suboptimal knowledge among LPG users leading to severe domestic burns, most common being due to gas leak followed by operator negligence.•Public education through community programmes and IEC activities can help in burn prevention by enhancing public knowledge regarding safety issues with LPG usage.
