•We examine the effect of disaster experience on responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.•Disaster experience increases people’s attention to the first known COVID-19 outbreak.•This increased search attention is correlated with deep stock market decreases in countries with SDE.•Governments in countries with SDE implement stricter COVID-19 containment measures.
