Abstract
Maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) is considered to be a valid measurement of the anaerobic capacity. Unfortunately, a classical method of calculation of MAOD proposed by Medbo et al. is time-consuming, so it has discouraged the use of MAOD by coaches and athletes. Therefore, more reliable and less time-consuming methods need to be proposed. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investtigate the reliability of predicting MAOD using only a single supramaximal exercise session (MAODALT). METHODS: We recruited 18 moderately male athletes from 400-m track running events (age:20.06 ± 1.47 yrs, skeletal muscle mass:58.27 ± 4.31 kg, percent body fat:12.43 ± 2.71%). They performed the following tests: (a) a maximal incremental exercise test, (b) five submaximal constant workload tests (50%,60%,70%,80% and 90% of velocity at VO2max), and (c) two supramaximal constant workload tests of the same duration (110% of velocity at VO2max). Standard values of MAOD was calculated for each subject as the difference between measured O2 during supramaximal session exercise and theoretical O2 demand by a linear relationship between submaximal oxygen uptake and treadmill speed.MAODALT was calculated from the blood lactate accumulation and fast component of oxygen uptake kinetics curve during exercise. RESULTS: Paired t-test result showed that there was no significant difference between MAODALT (3.59 ± 0.95 L) and MAOD (3.27 ± 0.69 L) ( p = 0.150). And the Bland-Altman test showed MAODALT and MAOD have a good consistency. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that the MAODALT can be used to estimate the MAOD, a larger sample can be studied based on different motion patterns in the future.
