•Cobalt nanoparticles and Co-Nx groups are anchored on N-doped graphene by a simple method.•The Co/Co-Nx@NG exhibits good adsorption and catalytic conversion of polysulfides.•The graphene structure formed in situ displays excellent electrical conductivity.
