Abstract
•Twin-screw elements were efficiently simulated with SPH flow simulations.•Numerous elements of different shape and form were investigated.•Local Residence Time Distributions of various screw element types were determined.•A time-extrapolation method to mitigate computational cost was developed and validated.•In-silico tracer experiments reveal underlying flow patterns of different screw geometries.
