•A new protection principle based on fault component energy equation is proposed.•Fault supplementary network considering different conditions of converter is built.•Impact of commutation failure on AC line protection is eliminated.•Accurate identification of the fault location is realized.•The proposed scheme provides satisfactory tolerance against fault resistance.
