Volumetric laser heating of nanosuspension microdroplets: Slow evaporation to mid-air explosion

•Illuminating pulsed infrared laser on droplet may result in mid-air explosion.•The explosion occurs at low reflectance and high absorption of the droplet.•Shallow, deep, directional and isotropic explosions are four explosion patterns.•A conduction model predicts the explosion and the explosion pattern.
