Measuring stocks of community wealth and their association with food systems efforts in rural and urban places

•Stocks of six community capitals are estimated for counties in the United States.•Community capital stocks vary widely across and within metro and nonmetro counties.•Considering stocks of community capitals is important in assessing policy outcomes.•Capital stocks strongly associate with farm participation in direct local food markets.•Capital associations differ considerably for farm participation on level of rurality.
