Cultural transmission and perception of vessel shapes among Hebron potters

•Vessel shape variations and their perception are estimated from field experiments.•We used the Elliptical Fourier method to analyze the vessel shape variations.•Vessel shapes are produced with a combination of cultural and individual traits.•Cultural traits do not necessarily propagate in the transmission chain.•Potters do perceive the subtle same-type vessel shape variations.
