Fine root biomass and necromass dynamics of Chinese fir plantations and natural secondary forests in subtropical China

•Higher fine root biomass in natural forests than in plantations in all age classes.•Fine root biomass peaks in the 27–31-yr-old across 5–41-year age chronosequences.•Higher fine root necromass in plantations than in natural forests.•Forest management has negative impacts on fine roots.
