•Linear systems with time constant coefficients have convolutive and ARX solutions.•ARX model of a transient inlet perturbation of a heat exchanger is calibrated.•Outlet temperature contrasts are signatures of structural changes/ calibration.•Exchanger malfunction NDT possible through transmittance and effectiveness changes.•These model and NDT technique are generic and apply to different types of exchanger.
