•Electromagnetic fields can effectively control RO membrane scaling.•Magnetic field effectively cleaned the scale on the water pipelines and tanks.•Magnetic field significantly reduced the normalized water permeability decline rate.•Scale formed on the membrane surface was loose and soft with magnetic field applied.•Main mechanism for membrane scaling control is magnetohydrodynamic effect.
