•Electrostatic sensing and imaging are combined to study drying kinetics of biomass.•Drying kinetics of biomass at different locations of the bubble are obtained.•The performances of five selected drying models are assessed and compared.•Gas-solid mass transfer is slightly enhanced for biomass in the bubble.
