Abstract
The present review of the biomarker adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is published in the series "Tumor markers" of the Zentralblatt fur Arbeitsmedizin, Arbeitsschutz und Ergonomie, which deals with the increasing use of the determination of specific markers in so-called manager preventive and check-up examinations. In principle, ACTH is not suitable for such precautionary measures but is a marker for the treatment, progression and recurrence control of disorders of the corticotropic axis. In this context it shows a high sensitivity and specificity but the marker should not be used as a screening marker for early diagnosis due to the circadian rhythm and dependence on stressors.
