Abstract
•Buckling of beams on 3D half-space is studied by means of a FE-BIE coupling method.•A mixed variational formulation based on the substrate Green function is adopted.•The FE-BIE model is effective in evaluating beam buckling loads and modal shapes.•Formulas for critical loads and wavelength of beams on elastic support are proposed.
