•Neurosurgeons prefer ACDF over PCF for resolving foraminal nerve root compression.•Most surgeons think that their preferred technique is the best according to literature.•There is no current evidence that clinical outcomes for ACDF or PCF are superior.•“Comfort” and “experience” were determining factors for all procedures of choice.•Of the respondents, 61,2% had minor exposure to the PCF technique during residency.
