From how to why: A quest for the common mathematical meanings behind two different division algorithms

•We introduced two algorithms for integer division in 6th grade and asked students to compare them.•The students came to appreciate the difference between knowing how to perform algorithms and why they work.•Most students gained control over the mathematical meanings behind algorithms.•We designed a new tool for analyzing the development of students' mathematical understanding associated with algorithms.
