•The average land equivalent ratio (LER) of maize/peanut intercropping was 1.31.•The high relative yield of maize contributed most to the high LER.•Maize/peanut intercropping attained on average a “win-no win” yield advantage.•PLERmaize was increased when maize was sown earlier than peanut.•N input increased PLERmaize and decreased PLERpeanut while LER was not affected.
