Recent Pockmark activity in Lake Banyoles (NE Spain) severely affected by changes in climate and land use

•Accumulated rainfall decrease results in groundwater discharge depletion.•Human activities caused depletion of groundwater resources.•A loss in the buoyancy is caused by the decrease in the groundwater discharge.•The lake lutocline deepens due to the reduction in the groundwater discharge.•Turbid plumes do not penetrate the thermal stratification due to buoyancy loss.
