Melting and solidification characteristics of cylindrical encapsulated phase change materials

•Experimental study and CFD modelling of capsulated PCM capsules are conducted.•Increasing the charging fluid temperature enhances the melting speed.•Incorporating fins significantly enhance the melting time in the capsules with the same PCM amount.•Increasing the number of fins beyond four inside the capsule slightly enhances the melting and solidification characteristics.
