•Equilibrium of carbonate impurities contributed to carbonate/brine than oil/brine.•Brine with SO42- results in higher water-wet condition compared to other solutions.•The measured adhesion force is inversely related to calculated disjoining pressure.•An increase of –COOH/–NH ratio shows more water-wet state.
