A latent profile analysis of adverse childhood experiences and adult health in a community sample
Child Abuse & Neglect(2021)
Abstract
•Latent profile analyses were conducted on a large sample of adult outpatients (n = 3932), using various types of potential childhood adversity as the indicators of the different ACE configurations.•Four configurations (or profiles) of ACEs emerged with distinct characteristics.•The profile with a dominance of physical neglect was associated with the highest levels of anxiety and depression.•Although the profiles characterized by high levels of sexual abuse alone, or sexual abuse combined with general adversity, had higher levels of emotional problems than the profile with low levels of adversity, the profiles characterizing mistreatment did not consistently differ from each other on the mental health outcomes.•These results showcase the importance of examining the specific relationships among different profiles of ACEs and mental health outcomes.
