Effect of In-Situ Precipitated White Particles on Mechanical Properties of (Ti, V, W, Mo)C-Based Cermets
JOM(2021)
Abstract
(Ti, V, W, Mo)C-based cermets were synthesized by varying the amount of WC and Mo. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction detection, Vickers hardness, and transverse rupture strength tests were used to examine the microstructure and mechanical properties. The results demonstrate that comprehensive mechanical properties were improved with dispersed white particles in the binder, and the crack propagated with deflection and bridging. In the fracture morphology, more dimples were formed. However, when the WC and Mo content was increased to 20 wt.%, the in-situ precipitated white particles agglomerated, and was difficult for the binder to release stress via deformation, resulting in a decrease in the toughness.
