•Lidar Biomass Index (LBI) was derived based on 3D structure parameters of crown.•LBI and LiDAR-crown metrics were calculated using TLS and reconstructed points.•Biomass allometric model using LBI performed well for conifer and deciduous trees.•LBI provides a new solution for tree-level biomass estimation using 3D remote sensing technology.
