Characterization of a novel fiber filtration system with a unique mechanism for adjusting the depth of the filter bed

•A novel fiber filtration system using a unique bed compression cap (BCC) structure.•Achieved complete removal of 5 μm particles without coagulant.•Achieved 90 % removal of 5 μm particles without increase in pressure loss.•Backwashing and flushing after each filter run maintained filtration performance.•Demonstrated filtration rates up to 200 % greater than rapid sand filters.
