•The high pressure torsion (HPT) of the Cu-Ag alloy has been studied.•HPT leads to the dissolution of silver precipitates in the copper matrix.•This disolution has been theoretically described.•The description is based on the phenomenological Landau theory and non-equilibrium thermodynamic potential.
