•The microstructure and mechanical properties Mg-Y-Zn containing trace of Ni were reported.•The extruded Mg-Y-Zn-Ni (at%) alloy exhibits good comprehensive mechanical properties.•The strengthening mechanism of LPSO phase with three kinds of morphologies was discussed quantificationally.
