Abstract
In this paper, a method for automatically determining the parting line for molded parts is presented. Given a molded part as well as its determined parting direction, we first classify all the faces of the molded part into three groups according to their orientations to the parting direction, their geometric characteristics and topological relationships. Then, the largest profile of each face group is set up and two candidate parting lines are determined. The optimal parting line is finally chosen by a certain criterion. The implementation results show that the proposed method is effective and efficient in automatically determining the parting line of a molded part.
