Abstract
•SO42− anions in HLLW solution can be sequestrated as BaSO4 by adding Ba(NO3)2.•Ba(NO3)2 pretreatment reduces the yellow phase content during vitrification process.•Ba(NO3)2 pretreatment allows to increase the SO3 retention in the waste glass.•Ba(NO3)2 pretreatment changes alkali sulfates of yellow phase into alkaline earth sulfates.
