•HEIs’ size, discipline variety, academic research, academic and industrial embeddedness are significant HEI-level determinants of teaching-focused UICs.•Location, academic autonomy and public ownership of HEIs, and government-supported intermediary organizations are significant institutional determinants of teaching-focused UICs.•Teaching-focused UICs improve graduates’ employability competencies, particularly domain-specific competencies.
