Asymptotic description of fretting wear and fretting fatigue for incomplete contacts

•Asymptotic contact tractions are found for the final worn incomplete contact.•The extent of the wear-zone is found for general incomplete contacts by asymptotes.•Simple calibrations link contact multipliers to crack tip stress intensity factors.•Crack tip stress intensity factors can be found without calculation of stress field.
