•The room-temperature fatigue strength is increased by 24.6% after SP+VF.•SP+VF treatment improves the high-temperature fatigue strength of the TC17 alloy.•Stability of the residual stress plays a key role on the fatigue resistance.•The sample size has an effect on the fatigue properties of TC17 titanium alloy.
