•Uranium-rich rims are associated with pyrite grains in organic sediments.•The U-layer is 100 s of microns thick.•The U at the pyrite edge consists of a mix of U(IV), coffinite and uraninite.•The proportion of U(VI) increases with distance from pyrite.•Organic matter-hosted pyrite may be important for U immobilisation.
