•Selective propylene oxidation over NH4+ and Ag+ exchanged hexagonal molybdates.•NH4+ consumption leads to ammoxidation products.•Ag+ strongly enhances acrylonitrile and acrolein formation over hexagonal framework.•Ag+ exchanged hexagonal frameworks transform into Ag/Ag2Mo4O13/α-MoO3 nanocomposite.•Ag2Mo4O13 strongly promotes acrolein formation over the nanocomposite.
