•Composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering application are fabricated.•The microstructural analysis revealed larger grains and higher porosity in 20H-80B.•The compressive strength of 20H-80S is higher compared to 20H-80B.•The BSA adsorption of 20H-80B is higher compared to 20H-80S.•The 20H-80B scaffold have a better bone mineralization capability in SBF.
