A bioenergetic approach for a novel aquaculture species, the giant barnacle Austromegabalanus psittacus (Molina, 1788): Effects of microalgal diets on larval development and metabolism

•Austromegabalanus psittacus larvae fed with Chaetoceros gracilis at concentrations of 2 × 105 cell mL−1 completed the larval development.•Using Isochrysis galbana as food for the naupliar stages of Austromegabalanus psittacus, the larval development did not reach the cyprid stage.•The highest energetic content of cypris resulted from naupliar stages fed with C. gracilis at highest concentrations of 6 × 105 cell mL−1.
