•Solid-state reaction synthesis of Na(Y, Gd)F4:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors.•980/1550 nm laser excited color-tunable upconversion luminescence.•Gd3+ ion doping can obviously enhance the UC luminescence intensity of the samples.•Applications in bio-science and PV solar cells.
