Abstract
Background The academization of the health care professions has led to a change in physiotherapy from primarily experience-based to evidence-based work. Although the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) is widely accepted in physiotherapy, the implementation in practice presents various challenges. Objective To identify potential barriers and supporting factors for the implementation of evidence-based practice in physiotherapy. Method Using an online questionnaire with 49 questions, physiotherapists (n=138) were surveyed about evidence-based practice. The results were presented descriptively. Results Physiotherapists with a master degree are able and willing to work more on the basis of evidence-based practice in comparison to physiotherapists with other degrees. Insecurities were mainly found in formulating scientific questions and in searching and critically evaluating articles of science. An education in evidence-based practice leads to greater confidence in its use. Clinical decision-making processes are mainly based on own practical experience, patients' preferences and information from professional journals. The lack of time during work was stated as the main barrier to evidence-based practice. Summarized research results on an evidence-based internet portal, by e-mail or in a professional journal are the most frequently mentioned supporters for the implementation of scientific findings. Conclusion Universities of applied sciences and employers play an important role in the transfer of knowledge and the implementation of evidence-based practice in physiotherapy.
