In this study, we use a specially designed external distractor to analyze the biomechanics of mandibular distraction osteogenesis. The device was applied to the mandibles of ten beagles unilaterally. Five mandibles underwent distraction at 1mm/day and five at 2mm/day. Upon analyzing the obtained force measurements via a mathematical model of mandibular distraction, we conclude that the mandible is capable of undergoing distraction at higher rates than the traditional 1mm/day.
