Research on the fault analysis method of belt conveyor idlers based on sound and thermal infrared image features

•A fault analysis method is proposed for belt conveyor idlers.•Idler sound features are analysed by statistical and dimension reduction methods.•Thermal infrared image features of idlers are analysed by statistical methods.•The fault types that different features are applicable for are determined.•The acquisition of idler fault data is contactless and easy to implement.
