Abstract
Objective: present and discuss some of the senses and impacts involved in the redirection of care aimed at drug users expressed in the changes of the Brazilian drug policy. Methodology: documentary research based on recent changes in mental health policy. Results: there is a progressive process of abandoning scientifically proven strategies and reinforcing the moral judgment and the warlike approach to combat psychoactive substances anchored in the perspective of the War on Drugs. Brazil, with the Law of Psychiatric Reform (no 10.2016), followed the footsteps of the Antimanicomial Struggle, a worldwide movement. On the other hand, historically in the country, there is the parallel performance of religious entities in anti-drug treatment, the so-called therapeutic communities. Conclusion: today, Brazilian policy has prioritized expressive public funding for the therapeutic communities, asylum institutions that work with abstinence as a treatment principle, which represents a setback of the policies conquered by Brazilian society.
