摘要
Background and Aims: Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. Numerous studies have shown galectin-3 (gal-3) as a novel prognostic biomarker with high predictive value for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Recently, it was suggested that plasma gal-3 could be a predictive marker for cerebrovascular ischemic events (CVI) in female subjects who have undergone carotid endarterectomy (CEA) due atherosclerotic carotid stenosis. Human gal-3 is encoded by LGALS-3 gene located on 14q21-q22 in a unique 300 kb haplotype block in Caucasians. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible association of tag genetic variants of the haplotype block containing LGALS-3 and the occurrence of CVI among patients who underwent CEA.
