摘要
Plant poisoning was suspected as a cause of the so called "swollen-brisket-disease" (a disease characterized by edema of the brisket) which occurs in certain areas of the State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. In order to establish the etiology of this disease, Brunfelsia pauciflora (Cham. et Schlecht.) Benth. (of the Solanaceae family) was fed experimentally to cattle, as it is found in large quantities in the pastures where the disease occurs. The plant was given in the fresh or dried stage, in single or repeated administrations to 11 bovines. All but one experimental animal showed symptoms of poisoning; none died due to the ingestion of the plant. The symptoms always seen in experimental poisoning by B. pauciflora, was mainly nervous excitement. This was very uniform, but varied in intensity. Symptoms included playing with the tongue, chewing movements, salivation, restlessness, stretching and shaking of the hindlegs, excitability and muscular tremors, sometimes with sudden contractions, lack of stability and the animal sometimes falling to the ground. Four animals head epileptic seizures. Loss of appetite and weight and liquid feces, also occurred. In the experiments with single doses, the symptoms were observed during 4 to 9 days, in the last third of which being less intense. In the experiments with repeated doses, symptoms grew less intense with time until they disappeared. They only reappeared or intensified on rainy days, later during the experiment not even then. Postmortem and histopathological examinations showed no lesions in 6 slaughtered experimental animals. The nervous symptoms seen in experimental poisoning by B. pauciflora are very different from those seen in the "swollen brisket disease", which are of cardiac origin.
